Description: The Maria (Ship) made a whaling voyage to the Pacific Ocean in 1832-36. She rounded Cape Horn, cruised on the Chilean and Peruvian coasts and touched at the Galapagos Islands, Easter Island, Maui (Hawai'i). There are two documents: 1. A typescript copy of a journal kept by the ship's carpenter Joseph B. ?, 18 February 1833-27 April 1836. 2. Logbook kept by Captain Macy beginning 13 October 1832 and ending 17 January 1836. Description: The journal has pages missing and others are almost illegible. The journal begins on 7 Dec 1836, when the whaler sailed from New Bedford. Brett describes in detail the activities of a harpooner, life on board a whaling ship in general, the other ships they `spoke', and the events experienced during their landfalls and time at sea. The journal has particularly good descriptions of Hawaii Source of title - Transcribed The whaling ship `Massachusetts' made a three-year voyage from New Bedford to the Pacific, hunting whales. The voyage included the Peruvian coast, the Galapagos and Hawaiian Islands, Guadaloupe, the Mexican coast, Juan Fernandez, Massafuero, Quiraquina and Talcahuano Bay. Quantity: 1 microfilm reel(s).
