Description: Photographic prints of bridges in the North and South Islands of New Zealand in locations from Mahinapua Creek to Mokoia Viaduct, taken by Geoffrey or Jocelyn Thornton 1950s to 2002. Some prints are labelled on the reverse; some have been marked up as if for publication. Title supplied by Library. Arrangement: Prints were in labelled glassine bags, many together with negatives, in a small box labelled "Bridges", in generally alphabetical order and largely by location. Bags were generally labelled with the name of the bridge, and sometimes the river or stream, and/or road or highway. on the left-hand side of the bag; the location was inscribed on on the right-hand side of the bag. A few bags were labelled with the location only. Some bags were alphabetised by the name of the river or bridge rather than the location. Description: Album of photographs relating to mountains and mountaineering in the Southern Alps. A photograph of George John Roberts, Charles Edward Douglas, and Leonard Cockayne (p 1), was probably taken by George Roberts' wife, who took one of the group at the same time but in different positions (See image at PAColl-5926-13) C H Stonor is seen with "Dr Teichmann" [i.e. Ebenezer Teichelmann] (p 40). Two photographs at the end of the album are of Tasmania, one showing a bush scene with a small waterfall; and one taken by John Watt Beattie of Hobart from the bay. Description: Photographs of mountains and valleys in the Southern Alps towards the West Coast, taken by Dr Ebenezer Teichelmann. The box is entitled "W.A. Kennedy. Dr. Teichelmann" (Box 24). The images are separated into seven sequences filed in paper folders. The folders are as follows: 1: Lake Mahinapua & Brunner (nos. 1-11). 2: About Hokitika (nos. 12-31). 3: From Halcombe Pk (nos. 32-48). 4: Waiho River Valley (nos. 49-65). 5: Franz Josef Terminal (nos. 66-77). 6: Franz Josef Glacier Valley (nos. 78-86). 7: Lake Kanieri (nos. 87-123). Image no. 24 has comment on the verso which reads "Dr. thinks it is the Buller Gorge, but I am inclined to Hokitika R. Gorge" [W A Kennedy]. A number are hand-coloured. South Island scenes include Milford Sound, lake and mountain views, and some of Christchurch city. North island scenes include a number in Wellington, with views of city streets, the Chief Post Office, Government Buildings, St John's Church and the railway station. Most of the other North Island views are of tourist destinations, particularly in the thermal regions, with hot springs, geysers and mud pools. There are a large number relating to Maori, especially at Whakarewarewa, with taniko weaving, flax weaving, poi dancers, te hongi, and posed portraits of young girls in front of a meeting house wearing different styles of cloaks.
