Description: Photograph album containing prints showing Italian cities and war scenes, circa 1945, taken by Robert Thomas Martin during his service in World War II. Contains images of Forli including the 6th Field Ambulance hospital, views of [and from?] the tower of Abbey of San Mercuriale, Porta schiavonia, snow scenes, cityscapes, tanks and other military vehicles, barbed wire fortification, bridges, canals, and bomb damage of buildings (including churches). Images of unidentified people in Forli include a sanitary worker, men performing ablutions in the snow, and men with slaughtered chickens. Also contains images of Christmas decorations in dining room. Other Italian locations photographed include Fabriano, Cassino (including monastery, war graves, and unidentified men), Foro Mussolini (Rome), Castel Frentano, view from Gradara Castle (Cattolica), the River Po, Venice sights, a Lake Como scene, Trieste, Monfalcone ship yards and “ICI” factory, San Marino, Opicina (with Jack King, Trevor Kenny, and Marin outside a tent), a collapsed bridge [Adige River?], baily bridges over Adige River and Po River (with support barges and boats and a sign reading “This bridge took a bloody lot of building! Important watch your spacing”). Also images of medical tents (interior and exterior), “MDS” cemetery at Villa Vincentina, partisans, soldiers drinking tea, military vehicles (including an ambulance, midget submarine, and trucks), [Italian?] men playing accordion and harmonica, and a midget submarine. Also contains photograph of General Freyberg addressing troops at an unidentified location and a studio portrait of Martin in uniform, taken on 13 Feb 1945 (his birthday) in Bari. Images from countries other than Italy include one image of Fencourt camp [Cambridge, New Zealand?] in 1942, an image of Lowry Hut YMCA building at Maadi camp, and an Alexandria street scene featuring a tram. Two photographs of dinner party given by Lt General Sir Richard McCreary, British 8th Army Commander. NZers included were Sgt J R Robinson, Pte Harry Parker, & A D Deavoll.
