Photographs of early New Zealand collected by Peter McLeavey
Date: [ca 1850s-1920]
From: McLeavey, Peter Joseph, 1936-2015: Photographs of New Zealand scenes and portraits of Peter McLeavey
By: Burton Brothers (Dunedin, N.Z.); Coxhead, Frank Arnold, 1851-1908; Denton, Frank James, 1869-1963; Partington, William Henry Thomas, 1854-1940; Swan, George Henry, 1833-1913; Tyree Brothers (Firm)
Reference: PAColl-10837-1
Description: Black and white photographic prints of early New Zealand, particularly of the Whanganui River and surrounding area, Oamaru, Wellington, and Dunedin. Some photographers are identified, and some of the photographs have names and negative numbers; these are inscribed on the negative along the bottom of the image. Some prints are mounted. One group of eleven photographs was delivered in an envelope along with a page from a sale catalogue, which indicates they were purchased together in the same lot. Some of the photographs bear a stamp on the reverse of H I Jones & Son, Wholesale Booksellers & Stationers, Wanganui. These photographs include four taken by Frank Denton, four taken by William Partington, and three by unidentified photographer(s). Denton's photographs are of the Whanganui River and show Tawhitinui Marae, tree ferns, and men paddling a waka. Partington's photographs are also of the Whanganui River area, specifically the Pipiriki and Jerusalem settlements. The remaining photographs were probably taken in the Whanganui District and show a church (labeled "Old Mission Church"), three people in a canoe on a river, and a Māori settlement. Four photographs are pasted to a sheet of paper, two on each side. On one side the photos show a dock with boats moored and a town in the background, and beneath each photo is handwritten "[Oamaru?] New Zealand". One of the photos bears the inscription "A Seargeant Photos". On the reverse are two photographs of trees, and beneath each photograph is handwritten "New forest". One photograph by the Tyree Brothers shows a view of Wellington taken from the Terrace, circa 1900. Visible buildings include Wellington Town Hall, the Commercial Union Building, and the New Zealand Government Life Insurance Offices. Two photographs of Dunedin were taken by the Burton Brothers and mounted on matte. One shows people standing in front of buildings with columns, and the other shows a view of Dunedin from the corner of Pitt and Queen Streets, with Knox Church in the foreground. Two photographs were taken by Frank Arnold Coxhead and mounted on matte. One shows a view of Te Houhou / George Sound; the inscription on the negative says this view is "from the waterfall", which could refer to Alice Falls. The other is a view of the Wet Jacket Arm area of Tamatea / Dusky Sound. Two photographs are from unidentified photographers. One, taken circa 1880, shows several men standing and sitting in front of farm buildings, horses, and wagons. The annotation on the reverse suggests it may have been taken on the East Coast. The other is a close-up shot of a Māori carving of two lizards, laying on a Māori weaving. Three photographs taken by George Henry Swan in 1862 are from a nine-part panoramic photograph of Wellington's waterfront area. The photographs show the Athenaeum and Lambton Quay showing Scotch Kirk; Plimmer's Noah's Ark; and Lambton Quay opposite Grey Street. Two photographs taken by an unindentified photographer circa 1868 make up a two-part panorama of Thorndon, Wellington, showing Old St Pauls, Wellington Harbour, and Mount Victoria. Some of these photographs have previously been exhibited in the Adam Art Gallery's exhibition 'Still looking: Peter McLeavey and the last photograph', 6 October - 20 December 2018. Information from the exhibition has informed the description of these items. Title supplied by Library. Quantity: 27 b&w original photographic print(s). 1 Other printed ephemera item(s).

Description: Album of images taken by various photographers, some of whom are identified, probably between 1870 and 1899. Views of New Zealand (tourist scenes of the South Island include the West Coast, Queenstown-Lakes District; and of the North Island include thermal areas around Lake Rotomahana, Ohinemutu, and Wairakei). These are interspersed with scenes in the West Indies, India, and Australia. Names of places shown in the album are listed above. Pages 29-30 show images of "SS Tarawera" in Wet Jacket Arm. Pages 30-32 show views of one or possibly two ships. The names in pencilled captions are not clear. The ship on page 30 appears to have the name RMSS Rune [or Rane, or Rome], but on page 32 that name is crossed out and appears to be RMSS Shamun? However the name on page 31 appears more like RMSS Shannon, and photographs of the Shannon appear very like the full image in this album on page 30, in which the ship is sailing through "the canal".
