Edward Morrah (Ned) Halpin (7/2/08 - 8/11/91) married Athena Annie Caran (1900 - 30/11/69) in 1936. He spent his single life in Palmerston North and his married life in Fielding. Early photos of wife taken between 1924 and 1936. Later photos of wife posted to him in middle east. He owned a camera and a car, and the photographs from the 1920s were taken on summer holidays. Description: Journals describe Sarah Pratt's (Fowler) life in Ramsbury, Wiltshire, England, her trip to Nelson on board the `Indus', 1842-1843 and first few years in Riwaka and Nelson, [ca 1843-1846]. Journals have in depth description of childhood in Ramsbury, the voyage to Nelson, setting up a farm in Riwaka and life in Nelson helping her brother run a coastal trading business with comments on the Wairau Affray, meetings and trading with local Maori, accidents, crops, fellow white settlers, the New Zealand Company and the developing communities in Riwaka and Nelson. Some of the entries are written as if the events described had happened very recently but the donor thought that the journals had actually been written some years after the period covered. The inscription has been transcribed below the sketch, and reads: 'In grateful memory of Captain Arthur Wakefield who landed here in Oct 1841 when founding Nelson and to record the coming of Riwaka's first pioneers, who landed at the foot of this hill on 2nd May 1842 / These mill stones were cut out in 1844 by William Mickell, the pioneer flour miller'.
