Hawaiian Mission Children's Society : Marquesas collection

From: Pacific Manuscripts Bureau : Records of the Pacific Area

Reference: Micro-MS-Coll-08-1170

Description: The collection comprises personal letters, formal reports of general meetings and mission station reports. Correspondence by Hawaiian missionaries to the Hawaiian Evangelical Association is in the Hawaiian language. Source of title - Transcribed Relationship complexity - English translations of Hawaiian letters may be found at Micro-MS-Coll-08-1171 In 1853 two Hawaiian ministers, Rev James K Kekela and Rev Samuel Kauwealoha, two deacons and their families were sent by the Hawaiian Missionary Board to the Marquesas Islands on the brigantine Royalist. Along with Benjamin Parker of the Kaneohe Mission Station, they were the first Hawaiians to serve as missionaries in the Marquesas. Supported by the the Hawaiian Evangelical Association, the Hawaiians hoped to succeed where non-Polynesian missionaries had failed. Over time support diminished, and in 1909, the last Hawaiian missionaries yielded to French protestants from Tahiti. An earlier mission to the Marquesas following a visit by Whitney, Tinker and Alexander of the Sandwich Islands Mission in 1832 was attempted in 1833 by the missionaries Richard Armstrong, W P Alexander, Benjamin Parker and their families. However, the mission was aborted the following year. Quantity: 5 microfilm reel(s). Finding Aids: Inventory available. Provenance: Donor/Lender/Vendor - Purchase, PMB, 2002
