Description: Transparency slides of Australia selected by Mr Williams as a representative collection to be used in a series of lectures on his return to England. This sheet shows a copy of a photograph of totemic markings on a group of Aboriginal totemic actors from the Southern Aranda area taken by T.G.H. Strehlow; Australian plants; corals, anemone guard fish, starfish, clams, crayfish and a giant hermit crab on Great Barrier Reef; and Green Island. These are followed by copies of maps of Australia including the East Coast, oceans around Australia and New Zealand, and maps showing climate, vegetation and population of Australia. The slides are not from Mr Williams' original numbered sequence. Arrangement: These slides were selected by Mr Williams from his original sequence to create a representative collection of Australian images which he used in illustrated lectures on his return to England. Proof before letterpress, for the illustration in Barrow, John. The eventful history of the mutiny and piratical seizure of H. M. S. Bounty. opp. p. 187. The Pandora under Captain Edwards, pursued the Bounty and its mutineers in 1792. The mutineers they had succeeded in capturing were shackled aboard the ship and went down with her when she foundered off the coast of Australia. The wreck was discovered in the 1980s. Description: A night scene with the two ships heeled over beyond the reef in the background, and men on low rocky reefs in the middle ground hauling objects from the ships. There are futher men in a lifeboat rowing towards the reef in the foreground Jorgensen is assumed to be the artist and Hooker the dedicatee. This is supported by the fact that Jorgensen was confined aboard the hulk Bahama at Chatham in 1909, and while there provided illustrations for a biographical manuscript that Hooker was preparingl. In addition, the handwriting below the image matches that below an image by Jorgensen reproduced to illustrate the article about him in Joan Kerr's 'Dictionary of Australian artists ... to 1870 (Melbourne, 1992, p. 415) Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - title in ink, with William Jackson Hooker Esqr below the title and Joergen Joergensen [with umlauts over the os] lower right Wreckreef, or Flinders' Reef, is part of Australia's Barrier Reef.
