Description: View from the first ridge above the beach showing a prefabricated barracks to the left and the tents erected to house the first settlers to Nelson, a well, a flag, and several carts. The view looks from the land towards the Boulder Bank and Haulashore Island, and the Arrow or Fifeshire rock across Tasman Bay to the distant snow-capped Moutere Hills and Tasman Range. The first three immigrant ships, The Will Watch, the Whitby and the Arrow are shown in the harbour with flags flying. There are clumps of trees at the water's edge, but the land is otherwise grassed or with flax and bracken. Original watercolour for the related lithograph "View of Nelson Haven in Tasman's Gulf, New Zealand, including a part of the site of the Town of Nelson" published in 1842. Exhibited in 'Treasures in Trust' exhibition to celebrate 75th anniversary of the Alexander Turnbull Library in 1995. Exhibited: Treasures in Trust. Probably a view looking west over the Waimea inlet towards Rabbit Island, Bell's Island and Best's Island, with the Arthur Range in the distance from the hills above Stoke, Nelson On acquisition, this watercolour was titled by the Library 'Mouth and lagoon, Wairau River, 1869?]. However the topography is not correct for a view looking north past the Wairau River mouth. Description: A view past flax and cabbage trees to a stream with toitoi on its banks and a man paddling a small canoe, a river plain with further cabbage trees, foothills and mountains. According to the accompanying text the view is a quiet reach of the Motueka River, about 10 miles from its mouth, with the Crusader or Table Mountain (now known as the Arthur Range) in the background, with cabbage tree (ti or cordyline australis), flax (phormium tenax or harakeke) and toe-toe or arundo conspicua. Description: Shows the town of Nelson from an elevated view, looking from the east across to the hills that Haven Road now follows around. A suggestion of Boulder Bank can be seen, with a steam ship beyond. The windmill can be seen standing prominently in the middle of the sketch, with numerous houses surrounding it.
