Description: Shows a grave stone with a tall cross on top of it. Before it kneels a woman in skirt and head-veil. A man and woman stand behind her in European dress, the woman smoking a cigar or cigarette. In the left, at a short distance, stands a couple in European dress, the woman holding a baby. Plate 93 in Domeny de Rienzi's book. French edition (1835-36), has same plate and has the additional information that Danvin was the copyist, and that Langlois engraved the plate, at least for the French edition. Description: Shows a half-length portrait of a young woman with hair centrally parted and tied back. She wears European blouse and striped skirt, and wears a cross on a pendant around her neck. The third edition of Dr Prichard's "Natural history of man" (London, 1848) has this image as Plate XXVI (opposite page 352), and it is entitled "Woman of the Mariana Islands". The artist is unknown, but the work may be derived from Arago or Pellion who are known to have visited the Mariana Islands prior to this date. Description: The log consists of two volumes with original marbled wrappesr inside a vellum cover. It is in Wallis' own hand, and appears to be the first draft of his official log which he handed to the Admiralty (Adm.55/35, PRO Reel 1579).The first volume covers the period up to 27 July 1767 and describes his voyage from England via Madeira and Cape Verde Island to Patagonia, then through the Straits of Magellan and previously unexplored parts of the Pacific, ending with an account of his stay at Tahiti which he named King George the Third's Island. Stitched in at the end of the volume is the report of John Gore, mate of the Dolphin, on the expedition he led into the interior of Tahiti on 25 July. Also included in the volume are sketches of flying fish and 5 profiles of the Patagonian coast.The second volume covers the period from his departure from Tahiti to his arrival back in England via Batavia and the Cape of Good Hope. At the end of the volume is a short vocabulary of the Tahitian language. On the inside of the back cover is a watercolour drawing of the ground plan and elevation of the Queen's house at Tahiti, with explanatory caption, and also in the volume is a pencil drawing of the Dolphin at Tahiti. The sketchbook contains 20 wash drawings of a ship, presumably the Dolphin. One of the drawings is titled "in a swall off Oznaburg Island - June - 1767 - in the South Seas." Each sheet is signed in the lower right hand corner "SW 1766". Description: Journal kept by Russell describing a whaling voyage on the `Lady Rowena' 1830-1832, with later annotations 1839-1846, and incidental papers 1820-1829. Includes a brief account of the voyage from London to Sydney, 25 Apr-19 Aug 1830, and a detailed account of the whaling voyage around the Solomon Islands, Papua, the Bismarck Archipelago, Japan, the Marianas, the Admiralty Islands, Dampier Strait, the Trobriand Islands, the Caroline Islands, Samoa, Tonga and the Santa Cruz Islands 2 Nov 1830-25 Jun 1832. Describes islanders' dress, their languages, appearances and culture, as well as islands geography, flora and fauna. Includes maps and island profiles. Source of title - Supplied by Library Bourn Russell arrived in Sydney, NSW, in 1826. Description: The first section of the volume covers the period from 19 June 1766 up to 27 July 1767 and describes his voyage from England via Madeira and Cape Verde Island to Patagonia, then through the Straits of Magellan and previously unexplored parts of the Pacific, ending with an account of his stay at Tahiti which he named King George the Third's Island. The next entries are "Remarks made at Georges Island". The second section covers the period from his departure from Tahiti to his arrival back in England via Batavia and the Cape of Good Hope, 28 July 1767 to 10 June 1768. The end pages in the volume include notes on the "Character of Admiral Boscawen and "An account of what I delivered in at the Admiralty on my arrival. A wreath of hair. One hundred pearls..." This log appears to be Wallis's own copy and the notes at the end on Admiral Boscawen etc are probably in his hand. An earlier draft of this log is held by the Mitchell Library in Sydney.
