Description: The tribute includes lists of paintings and drawings, lists of `profiles' published in the Pacific Islands Monthly, Hilder family genealogy details, maps, magazines, invitations and catalogues to exhibitions, correspondence, navigation charts, descriptions of islands, indexes, passenger lists, photographs and cards, and manuscripts of Brett Hilder, including a substantial work on marine phosphorescence. Source of title - Transcribed Brett Hilder, a mariner with the Burns Philp fleet, captained passenger and cargo vessels between Sydney and the Solomon Islands after serving with the RAAF during World War II. A keen artist, Hilder painted and drew many portraits and landscapes of the people and places he visited. His work has been exhibited in Australia, the Pacific, and New York. He also wrote extensively on navigation, ports, islands and other topics. In 1964 he became Senior Captain with Burns Philp and founded the Australian Institute of Navigation. On his death he left a unique artistic legacy closely associated with the heyday of the Burns Philp era in the South Pacific. Quantity: 1 microfilm reel(s). Finding Aids: Inventory available. Description: Shows head and shoulders portraits of four young men of Tikopia in the Solomon Islands. All except the figure at lower left are tattooed and bearded. The figure at lower left wears a necklace, and the man at upper right wears a disc-shaped pendant on a cord around his neck. The two right hand figures each wear a gold earring. Other variations of this image show the figures in reverse. Other Titles - Inhabitants of the island of Tikopia Sainson made the original drawings for these subjects in 1827 or 1828. An example of this image by Fuchs and Honegger, but in reverse, was published in 1845, in Heinrich Rudolf Schinz' "Naturgeschichte und Abbildungen des Menschen der verschieden en Rassen und Stamme nach den neuesten Entdeckungen und vorzuglichsten Originalien" (3rd edition, 1845).
