The Niagara Falls are situated on the Niagara River which drains Lake Erie into Lake Ontario and forms the international border between the Canadian Province of Ontario and the US State of New York. Views differ between the two sides.

Seddon album 1

Description: Photographs, chiefly taken by Louie J Seddon in 1897 on a trip around the world on the occasion of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. They include several photographs on the group's return, especially one of Parliament Buildings, and five views of a reception for Mr Crow (R J Seddon's private secretary) by Ministerial Secretaries celebrating his return. Beneath the main inscription inside the first page is further information in Louie Seddon's copper-plate writing which reads "Our party consisted of my Father (the Right Hon. R J Seddon; Mother; Sister (Mary); Myself and Mr W Crow (Father's private secretary). We left Wellington, 15th April 1897, went via San Francisco - New York route to London - and returned by the overland (to Naples) and Suez Canal route, arriving Wellington, 8th Sept. 1897". En route to England a number of photographs show shipboard life, and several of the party in Samoa, one with Bishop and Mrs Wallis, and King Malietoa. In England there is one photograph cut from an English paper showing R J Seddon at Hawarden Castle with the Right Hon. Sir Wilford Laurier, Rt Hon and Lady Carrington, Rt Hon and Mrs W E Gladstone, Rt Hon G H Reid and Sir Louis Davies, July 1897. Also a sequence of views of the "Agent General's River Excursion on the Thames". The group visited various British Seddon family members at Eccleston and Bickerstaffe; and they visited Scottish writer and philosopher Thomas Carlyle's birthplace and grave. Photographs take up 32 pages with the rest blank apart from two newspaper cuttings attached to page 53. One is about Lady Freyberg at the Linen Guild (Evening Post, August 11, 1948?); the other about the ship Janie Seddon which was about to be sold (September 1946). On page 009 is a newspaper article on "King Dick" (Richard John Seddon), written in 1951 "By one who knew him" 45 years after his death. Description: Contains photographic prints, largely showing the United States of America, 1982 to circa 1989. Photographs taken by Les Cleveland as well as other, unidentified photographers, possibly including Mary Cleveland. Also some photographs of family in New Zealand. Prints show city scenes in New York and Washington D.C. including residential and commercial buildings, museums, street scenes. parks, monuments, shop window displays, and sculptures. People are largely unidentified and include family groups (Watkins family), pedestrians, people eating at a diner, homeless people, and protestors. Les and Mary Cleveland also appear in a number of photographs. A number of photographs relate to the Washington Redskins, including street stalls selling merchandise and banners of support around Washington D.C.. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Smithsonian Museum (including space and aviation related exhibits). Scenes from Buffalo, Baltimore, and New Harmony feature historic and modern buildings and street scenes. The USS Constellation museum ship is photographed. Also photographs of Niagara Falls and the cityscape of the Canadian city Niagara Falls. Photographs of Edward and Peter Cleveland canoeing on a pond or lake are taken at an unidentified location in New Zealand and with an older woman [a Cleveland relative?]. Description: Holograph manuscript volume recording the travels of Llewellyn in the United States of America and New Zealand in the form of draft letters to his family. Journal begins with Llewellyn's departure on 'The Java' from Liverpool on 19 August 1871. Journey continues to Cork and Queenstown [Cobh] in Ireland, before crossing the Atlantic to New York. In the United States visits are made up the Hudson River to West Point, and to Albany by railway, and on to Niagara Falls, Toronto, Chicago, and Salt Lake City, before finally departing for New Zealand from San Francisco on 13 September 1871. Voyage on the SS 'Moses Taylor' to Honolulu and then on the SS 'Nevada' to Auckland. Most of the journal recalls Llewellyn's travels, friendships, and experiences in New Zealand, particularly in Wellington where he was largely based. Some notable experiences are the many balls and dances attended in the Houses of Parliament in Wellington, releasing the first brown trout in North Island rivers with Sir James Hector, learning to take photographs with William Thomas Travers, meetings with railway contractor John Brogden and the military secretary and soldier Sir George Whitmore. The journal ends abruptly on 15 January 1872 even though Llewellyn indicates he is to remain in New Zealand for a longer period before travelling on to Australia. Title supplied by Library. On acquisition by the Library this lithograph was thought to be the work of William Fox. Instead it is the cover illustration for Table Rock Schottisch, piano music by John Cooke, (New York, Jacques and Brother, 1852). Description: Photographs taken in the 1870s, covering a wide range of places, photographers mostly unidentified, and most images with no captions. The first group were taken in an around the Mediterranean, including Gibraltar, but particularly focussing on the Suez Canal. The sequence includes a copy of a montage produced by Hippolyte Arnoux, showing a map of the route of the canal, surrounded by photographs of canal designer Ferdinand de Lesseps and various sites along the route. Other images in this sequence were probably taken by Arnoux who was working in Egypt during this period. The next group of images travel via India (?), to Australia. Views of Melbourne include Government House, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Houses of Parliament, the Scots' Church (in Collins Street), the Post Office, the Town Hall, and the Public Library. Following these is a panorama of Sydney, and views of Tasmania. The New Zealand scenes start with a panorama of Auckland, the Mount Eden residence of G.B. (?, pencilled name undeciphered), and the Auckland Domain). Images further south include Ohinemutu; the Pink and White Terraces; Napier; the Manawatu Gorge; Wellington (with the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel visible in the foreground); Nelson; the wreck of the ship Otago, at Chasland's Mistake; and a number of views in the Dunedin area.
