Tompkins, Lance, 1895-1977

Born in Kimbolton, 18 December 1895. Son of Arthur Henry Tompkins and Lilian Jane (née Crabb). Worked as a law clerk before the War, and then served with the New Zealand Field Artillery, 1 Battery in the First World War (Service Number: 24963.) Served with the Home Service Battery, Royal New Zealnd Artillery in the Second World War (Service Number: 589019.) Last rank was as a World War Two Major. After the the second World War, he worked as a solicitor, Queen's Council, and Supreme Court Judge. Died in Taupo, 22 January 1977, aged 81.

Description: Postcards mostly written to Arthur Lance Tompkins, generally addressed as "Lance" from: - Leonard Athol McKenzie (from Egypt and Amiens), 1915-1916 - Renée Roy, Paris, 22 February 1919 (written in French), and 26 July 1919 (in English). Some items sent to others from Tompkins including: - A letter card to Gladys Tompkins featuring an image of Lime Street in Liverpool, and of the RMS 'Lusitania' (sent in March 2017) - Two printed souvenir booklets containing photographic images of Manchester, Belfast (the latter is annotated: "With love from Lance to KOA" 21 February 1919). Also, field service postcards; an ANZAC Mounted Division Xmas 1917 postcard; one postcard with a middle aged man dressed in cricket whites; and five postcards of French scenes, and a small book of postcards of scenes of Paris. Processing information: The reference number for this collection was originally MS-Group-2431 but was given the new reference of ATL-Group-00347 at the time of arrangement and description in 2018, due to it's multi-format nature.

The first informs him that she is about to depart for Paris in connection with her canteen work and expresses the desire they will be able to see each other. The second letter is concerned mainly with Helen's new found enthusiasm for Christian Science which she thinks can be used to protect other people from harm, including her brother at the front.
