Recalls the family's moves to Dannevirke then Gisborne where her father bought a garage. Mentions Robert Kerridge's service car business. Describes attending Gisborne Primary School and getting two years at high school by achieving proficiency. Recalls staying with her mother, who had bad health, until she was married. Describes how her husband Miles Eteveneaux arrived in Gisborne with the Air Force. Talks about his family living in Akaroa then moving to Dipton. Mentions that Miles Eteveneaux showed films round rural halls from the back of a Dodge truck. Describes how he got a scholarship to an electrical college in Chicago where he learnt the functions of studio work. Description: Describes family background and early childhood, father's working life during the depression (1930s) and his own attitude to politics and religion. Recalls early employment as a message boy (describes the linotype business), a projectionist, and then his electrical apprenticeship with H.C. Urlwin - Christchurch in 1947, night school, and attitude towards cottage wiring work. Gives background to joining the State Hydro Department at Karapiro Hydro Scheme, the life at the single men's camp, the personalities, involvement with Maori. Recalls the personality and skills of Roy Surridge, Power Plant Engineer from Head Office Wellington. Refers to wiring work for the Ministry of Works at Mangakino and Tokoroa and friends (photograph in printed abstract) that he worked with at Karapiro and Maraetai Hydro Scheme. Describes problems and conflict at Whakamaru Hydro Station in early 1950s:- the Metropolitan Vickers machinery; the management style of Resident Engineer Colin Bambury; upgrades in circuit breaker system; accidents and hazards. Outlines time as Overseer at Roxburgh Hydro Station in mid fifties; descibes the personality and effectiveness of Eric Sandelin, the Resident Engineer and boss; compares the equipment from various countries and manufacturers; the need for Roxburgh because of lack of sufficient power in the South Island. Recalls the installation of machinery at Atiamuri Hydro Station in mid 1950s and describes problems that occurred during the commissioning of Benmore Hydro Scheme in the 1060s, details the faults and remedies. Describes the equipment, technical problems and noise pollution while Construction Supervisor at the Otahuhu Gas Turbine station in Auckland in late 1960s. Mentions working relationship with Head Office whilst on Huntly Power Station construction. Describes working for Charlie Leach, an electrician at Okere power station. Talks about the electricians Asher and Clouston and going to Auckland to work for Clouston for a few months before working for Otto Feisst in Lower Hutt. Describes being an electrician for the Hutt Valley Power Board and then returning to Rotorua and opening an electrical shop. Describes working with large bundles of conduit. Recalls how he and Freddie Biggs wired all the houses in Rotorua at the time. Mentions that power first came through from Arapuni and Horahora in 1926. Mentions that Jimmy Hill worked with him. Talks about other electricians Les (`Te Kooti') Clarke, Cyril Clarke, Cedric Knight and others. Mentions the plumbing business of Sam Hale next to the Peerless Hall. Describes marrying in 1928. Comments on the explosion in demand for electricity about this time and particularly after World War II. Recalls the Maori wife of his uncle Frank Woolliams and her family land in the King Country. Mentions that there are three generations of Frank Woolliams. Talks about his father building the Mansions Hotel, running Thirwell House, owning a farmlet and building Woolliams Buildings. Gives details of their operation of the Mansions. Mentions that Fred Reeves, who had run Brent's Hotel, took over the Mansions from his father.
