(2) Ko Tara Tara / Ko te Waihapa / Wangaroa Harbour

Date: Oct. 12 [1844]

From: Hutton, Thomas Biddulph (Rev), 1824-1886: [Three sketchbooks of New Zealand scenes and people. 1844-1847]

By: Hutton, Thomas Biddulph, 1824-1886

Reference: E-111-1-006

Description: A view of Taratara Mountain, in Waihapa Bay, part of the Whangaroa Harbour. A boat, possibly a waka, can be seen in the middle distance. Pages 7-8 of the sketchbook (Library's numbering) contain Hutton's notes on pages 1-8 of his drawings (artist's numbering). His description of the scene on this page (p.2) is: "This view was taken from the boat in which Mr Cotton, myself and the natives were sailing up the Kaeo to Whangaroa – there is nothing remarkable in tradition about the former place but Waihapa is famous as being the last place of refuge taken by the Whangaroa natives when pursued by the merciless Hongi – they fled from the pa situated at the top of this hill towards Hokianga and it was in this pursuit that Hongi received the musket wound of which he died about a year afterwards. There is no pa there now but the foregoing sketch gives a good idea of the fortifications of the old pa." Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - Ko Tara Tara [in ink]; Ko te Waihapa [in ink]; Oct 12 [in pencil] Wangaroa Harbour [in pencil] Physical Description: Pencil on page of sketchbook, 160 x 200 mm
