Description: Letters from Spear. Many are written to Hui Mana, daughter of his business partner Bill Harrison and Bill's wife, Jane. Other letters are written to Bill and Jane, and to his mother. The letters recount his training in New Zealand in late 1917 and travel to Europe, where he saw action in 1918, was based in occupied Germany for part of 1919, and returned to New Zealand in 1920. Also includes two annotated troop magazines. With the accession is a printed account by Bill Harrington, the donor, "Voyage to the S.O.M.M.E. Letters from a kiwi soldier with the 38th reinforcements, which reproduces some of the letters, and provides family history and background about Spear.
