Description: Scenic photographs of Cass & Craigieburn, Midland Railway, Waimakariri Gorge taken between circa 1860s and 1940s by various unidentified and identified photographers. Photograph (no. 13) shows the hut owned by the Canterbury Coleege Mountain Biological Station; photograph (no. 25) of the old Benmore Station (no. 25) was taken by D L Lundy circa 1860s, and view (no. 26) shows the same site much later with fully grown macrocarpa trees, and the house in poorer condition; the views of the Midland Railway Line including when under construction, with the line, tunnels, and viaducts seen over a number of years were possibly taken by William Williams who was a photographer and who worked for the Railways Department; other images were probably taken by Charles Beken including one of "the meeting of the Arthur's Pass tunnel headings" with two men and a woman beside the dark opening. Description: Personal and news photographs taken and collected by J L Wilson featuring North Canterbury 1864-1907, predominantly from 1900-1907. Contains various scenes illustrating Maori life at Tuahiwi, and the powhiri welcoming Governor General Plunket and Lady Plunket (27 April 1905). Plunket series also covers Kaiapoi receptions at Borough Council Chamber and Oddfellows Hall. Other named figures include Wiremu Te Kakakura Parata, Mrs Rotangi, Chief Pohipi outside his Ashley dwelling, Manihi and his wife, and George Leech. Extensive coverage of June 1905 flood featuring damaged Ashley Railway Bridge, Waimakariri River, Gorge Bridge, Stewart's Gully Bridge, submerged farmland, and numerous images of, and relating to, the railway accident at Chaimey's Corner, including train wreck and the burial of R J Alexander (Kaiapoi Public Cemetary) and the funeral procession of John Richards (both accident victims). Description: New Zealand scenes including thermal areas in the North Island, and river, mountain and roading scenes in the South Island, taken by various identified and unidentified photographers between about the 1880s and 1900s. Two photographers, Josiah Martin and Patrick Thomas Malaghan took most of the images. Other identified photographers include Edmund Wheeler, F. Finch, A.J. Iles, Charles Spencer, Edward Le Grice, J.V. (James Valentine), and Ross (Photographer, Invercargill). Several of the unidentified photographers are listed under their initials only, and include one with the initials T.S.M (or S.T.M. in a monogram), also A.A.B., R.G., Rooney, Luney (?), and L.M. A large number of those taken by Patrick Malaghan show Skippers Road and the Shotover River, with Pinchers Bluff, Huttons Cutting, Hell's Gate, and Skippers Creek. Thermal areas in the North Island show the Pink and White Terraces before the 1886 eruption of mount Tarawera, and also a number taken after the eruption, including the remnants of Te Ariki Pa. A large number also show various geysers, mud pools and hot springs. One method of crossing rivers is shown with the Hooker Wire Bridge (or Hooker Cage) and a "chair" travelling across a wire in Skippers over the Shotover River. Description: Photographs taken by John Dobree Pascoe and others in the Southern Alps. They include views of mountaineers; views of mountain ranges and valleys; mountain huts and life enjoyed by the mountaineers. One sequence (pages 129-140) show aspects of the search for the body of Edgar Russell who died on Mount Avalanche in 1933. They show the location where he was lost on 30th July 1933, the search party, and the routes they took to search, finally succeeding on 6th August 1933. Pages 99-100, 83-84, and 105-106 show the building and completion of the Athur's Pass Canterbury Mountaineering Club mountain hut; page 87 has an indistinct view of the unveiling of the Arthur Dobson Memorial, on 18th April 1937 (5 km north of Arthur's Pass Village).
