Wellington Folk Centre

Established as an incorporated society in 1969 when two previous folk music clubs, Wellington Folk Club and Port Nicholson Folk Club merged. Operated premises at 41 palmer Street (from 1969-circa 1972), at 10 Holland Street (circa 1972 -1991). In 1991 the centre adopted the trading name Acoustic Routes and relocated to the Band Rotunda in Oriental Bay. Is also a registered charity.

Description: The records of the Wellington Folk Centre include minutes and minute books (1970-1995); agendas and other administrative papers; suggestions and complaints (1976-1978); membership books (1972-1987); financial records and related correspondence; and correspondence, publicity materials, newsclippings, programmes, serials and brochures. Some items include words of songs and many items relate to other folk groups in New Zealand and overseas. There is a small group of papers relating to the Kapiti Folk Club (1968-1974). Papers of the Wellington Folk Festivals and National Festivals (1969-1986) and the Tom Paxton concert (1984) are included. Also includes audio recordings: live performances at the Wellington Folk Centre 1983-1984, a selection of 'Folk On Access' programmes broadcast on Access Radio between 1984 and 1986, and some live performances from the Port Nicholson Folk Festival in 1974 and 1975. Some recordings have unidentified content. Part of the Archive of New Zealand Music Title supplied by Library. Arrangement: As far as possible the papers have been arranged in original order, with materials in ring binders being split and foldered, where necessary. However, much of the collection had to be arranged into some order. The series arrangement was created by the archivist in 2023. Where existing original order could be perceived, it has been maintained. The Wellington Folk Centre was incorporated as a society in 1969. The society hosted folk music festivals, regular club night performances, tours by visiting musicians, and produced magazines and newsletters. Members of the society also produced the community radio series 'Folk On Access' between 1984 and 2004. In 1991 the Centre adopted the trading name Acoustic Routes and continues to operate a club of that name in Wellington City.
