Whitcombe, George Hawkes, 1854?-1917

Joint founder with George Tombs, of the printing firm Whitcombe & Tombs. He was born in Brittany, France, educated partly in France and partly at Lansing College, England. At the age of 16 he arrived in New Zealand, and joined an elder brother, Mr. Charles Whitcombe, at New Plymouth. He lived for a short time in Wanganui and then in Christchurch where he joined John Crerar as a bookseller, until Crerar's retirement. He then went into partnership with George Tombs, a printer of Cashel Street.
