Context: Longstone, the former head of the Ministry of Education who was recruited specifically for the position from England, resigned from her post after only 13 months on the job, amid the Novopay debacle and disagreements with Minister of Education, Hekia Parata. Longstone received a before-tax payout of over $425,000-- the equivalent of six months remuneration and $157,523 in outstanding holiday pay and a payment in lieu of notice. The Novopay online payroll system has resulted in tens of thousands of errors since it was implemented in August 2012, with some teachers getting paid too much, others too little, and some not at all.
