The Pencilsword, #3. Lights, camera, action

Date: 8 October 2014

From: Morris, Toby, 1980- :['The Pencilsword' cartoon strip, and other cartoons]

Reference: DCDL-0031454

Description: The third Pencilsword cartoon, under the heading 'Lights, Camera, Action', with an animation that inserts 'phone' between lights and camera. Begins recounting the cartoonist's attempts to enter the What Now win-a-wish competition to have their movie about penguins made. He says as he grew up he learned that to make a TV show, film or book you need money, equipment, crew, contracts, etc, and for 'important people in suits' to get on board. Then he speaks about 'Flat 3', where some Aucklanders just made their own series. He then compares this with his love of zine culture when he was at school, but he says that today distribution channels are literally right in our pockets, and you can use a phone, laptop, Ableton, internet distribution, etc. He concludes by claiming the 'wall of "no"' that used to exist is now gone and we should just 'make make make'. Wider context is the possibilities for digital creation and the maker movement.
