United Nations Trusteeship Council

Formed in 1945 to supervise the administration of Trust Territories that were placed under the international trusteeship system created by the United Nations charter. Goals were to promote advancement of the inhabitants and their move to independence or self government. Eleven territories were placed under trusteeship, four in Ocenaia and seven in Africa. As the last territory became independent in 1994, the Council suspended operation on 1 November 1994. It continues to exist, but meets as occasion requires (see www.un.org)
