Description: Arthur Rae Cox born Weatherstone, near Lawrence, Central Otago 1906. Outlines family background - parents migrated to the North Island in search of work, father spending 20 years in the police force in Taranaki before retiring to farm in Hokianga. Recalls life in Rawene until the age of 8 years and move to Hokianga aged 13 years. Describes school in Rawene, games and sports. Discusses various teachers - Mrs Mary C Hay; Sarah Rothbury; headmasters, William H Smith and Norman F Shaw. Refers to Fred Butland, later the wharfinger. Describes father's work as a policeman and prisoners in the lock-up. Recalls local businesses: Union Box and Packing Co. Simons Engineers, and Sash & Door Co. (Kenny Cook). Recalls family farm and daily routine with so much time spent cutting gorse. Describes stock, initially milking crossbreds, then Jerseys and now daughter and son-in-law have changed to Friesians on taking over farm. Talks about social life in Oue. Discusses interest in Dairy Factory administration 1939-1940 and being elected as a Director and formation of Bay of Islands Dairy Co. Discusses involvement with the Hospital Board and standing for County Council in 1938. Refers to Dr Smith. Explains the Special Area concept and Dr Smith's involvement in the scheme. Description: A woman with a baby is sheltering behind a wind break at a beach in Whangarei Harbour, and a small boy is leaning over the fence to play with the baby (frame 1). A man and a woman are seen outside a house, probably in Hikurangi township (frames 2 to 5). An old woman (kuia) is seen in a quilted dressing gown, sewing in a house (frame 6). She has been identified by Hugh Karena as Rangi Karena Wiki (Rangitaupua Wiki Karena). Frames 7 to 11 show men and women at work in the Hikurangi Co-operative Dairy Company.
