Served in the First World War. Part of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in Samoa in 1914 (Serial No. 2/92), later sailing to Suez in 1915. His enlistment details give his enlistment address as Illott's Advertising Agency Wellington.

Description: Programme for a variety concert probably held in Apia, featuring performers of the Samoa Expeditionary Force, including Pvt L P Leary, Gunner G M Silver, Pvt G P Hanna, Gunner C Freyberg, Pvt Cliff Baker, and others (Chapman, Robert Vial, Neill, Wickson, Bark, Wakelin, Watson, Pierard, Orman, Kirby, Smith, Turnbull, Dodgson, Walker, Jesson, Saxon, Pearce, Griffin, Thompson, John Fuller, A E Sodder, Cole). Part 1 was a miscellany of song, recitation and dance, and Part 2 was a three-act farce titled: "The snaring of Samoa", or "Don't kill the lizard". The cast is listed as is a synopsis of scenery (the setting is Apia, Samoa) The back cover shows a hand-drawn caricature of a German, possibly Kaiser Bill.
