Knox Church (Christchurch, N.Z.)

North Belt Church

Presbyterian church founded in 1880 and located on corner of Victoria Street and Bealey Avenue, Christchurch central city. Originally known as North Belt Church, its name changed to Knox Church in 1904. First church building was designed by Samuel Farr and built of timber. In 1902 a new brick and Oamaru stone church building designed in Gothic revival style by architects Robert and Edward England was constructed alongside the original church building. The original church building was rpelaced in 1964 by a modern annex of a hall, committee rooms, offices and assoicated facilities. The brick church was known for soaring timber archways, pipe organ and stained glass windows depicting blue braided rivers of Canterbury. Church was extensively damaged in the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes, woodwork ceiling and roof remaining.
