Porangahau Station

Sheep and cattle station established in 1854. First managed by David Souter and William Henry Hunter, brothers of George Hunter (1821-1880), a director of the Wellington firm Bethune and Hunter Ltd, who built the first homestead. Following a fire the homestead was rebuilt in 1920, during the time when Sir George Hunter (1859-1930) was manager. House remained in the Hunter family until 1986. In the 2000s the name was changed to Chapelwick Estate when the house became an accomodation and function venue. (See internet http://www.lambcountry.co.nz/discover/porangahau).

Chapel opened in 1877. See description and photograph of chapel on www.historic.org.nz
