Description: Comprises warrent of appointment appointing Boswell as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and three diaries kept by him while he was representing New Zealand based in Moscow, Jul 1944-Jul 1949. There is a gap in the diary entries for the period Dec 1947-July 1948. The diaries record Boswell's diplomatic and social duties as well as containing comments on international affairs as seen from Moscow and on domestic affairs in the Soviet Union. He was ably assisted by Desmond (Paddy) Costello. Teacher, politician and diplomat. In 1944 he was chosen to head the newly established New Zealand legation in Moscow. Description: Letters describe life in the Soviet Union in the immediate post-war period. They relate mainly to Moscow but also include descriptions of Leningrad and trips she made to Finland and England. Boswell warns her correspondent that she must be discrete in what she writes as the Soviet authorities are super-sensitive to any critical comments about their country. The last letter, dated 27 Nov 1951, was written in Auckland and expresses the writer's disappointment at the defeat of the Labour Party in the recent elections. She also expressess concern at the infiltration of the Labour Party by Communists.
