St. Paul's Church (Kaikoura, N.Z.)

Presbyterian church designed by William Houl, built on west corner of section next to Takahanga Reserve, adjacent to mouth of Lyell Creek, in 1879. Part of the section already had the manse built on it in 1878. See J M Sherrard's "Kaikoura; a history of the district", pages 289-92; and "St Paul's Presbyterian Church, Kaikoura, 75th anniversary 1877-1952" (NZ&P 285 1952).

Description: Shows the west end of the Kaikoura township, with mountains of the Kaikoura range in the background. The coast is visible at the right, and the Lyell Creek flows towards the viewer. At left is the road with a rider on horseback, and a small wooden church with five windows along the side, stands on the small rise at extreme left. Entitled "Town of Kaikoura" in auction catalogue. Central mountain range is slightly more peaked than in photographs, but location decided because of similarity of stream to that in James C Richmond's "Kaikoura in the village" (ATL C-090-005), and in William Francis Barraud's "Kaikoura from West End" (ATL A-084-022). See also photo of West End in Sherrard's "Kaikoura; a history of the district", between pages 160-161. Another similar view is in Henry Grant Lloyd's "Kaikoura and the Kaikouras. Feb 14, 1888" (file print in D&P - original held in Mitchell Library). The area between the terrace and Lyell Creek was part of the Takahanga pa. Sherrard (op. cit) page 38, says:The tiny village of half a dozen whares that stood between the terrace and the mouth of the Lyell Creek when the township was first settled was burnt in the late 1870's and the inhabitants joined those Maoris already living on the north bank of the mouth of the Hapuku River...\" The church is probably St Paul's Presbyterian Church - see Sherrard op. cit. page 291: \"Captain Davidson exchanged his sections next to the Maori pa [Takahanga Pa, or Reserve, shown on map in Cartography section as being near mouth of Lyell Creek] for the land owned by the church further east in the town, a five-roomed manse was ready for occupation by August 1878, and St Paul's church was opened on 2 November 1879. The booklet \"Kaikoura St Paul's Presbyterian Church, 75th anniversary 1877-1952\" (NZ&P 285 1952) page 10, goes into more detail, and states that the committee agreed to build the church designed by William Houl, on the spur of the hill on the west corner of the section [already partly occupied by the manse].
