Matara (Farm)

A property at Wai Ora/Waiora, northeast of Whanganui on the Whanganui River, established by Thomas Henry Harper (1835-1873) in the 1850s, and later farmed by his son Henry Spencer Grey Harper (1862-1918).

Description: Shows `Matara', the homestead of H Harper at Wai Ora, Aramoho, Wanganui, in the 1890s. The Whanganui River runs alongside on the left, the farmhouse and outbuildings are on cleared flat land with a slight indication of a garden, fences and rows of trees. Two horses (or cows) are grazing near the river. Flax in the foreground In 1859, Mary Medley's sister, Laura, married Thomas Henry Harper of Wai Ora, Aramoho, Whanganui. Thomas Henry Harper died in 1873. This view is likely to show the Wai Ora property of his son, Henry Harper, nephew of the artist.
