West Coast Mining album

Description: Very clear views of West Coast gold and coal mines (mainly in the Reefton subdivision), and mining towns, taken by unidentified photographers, except for one of "Wondrous Waiuta New Zealand" Jos. Divis Photo (p 27). Views on various roads include the Reefton to Blackspoint Road, Reefton to Westport Road, the Buller Gorge, the Maruia Road alongside the Inangahua River, Progress Road, and fording a river near Progress Mill. Images relating to mines include a winter picture of the old Wealth (of Nations) waterwheel covered in icicles; and gold batteries at various stages of development. Gold mines include the Progress Mine, Wealth of Nations Mine, Welcome Mine, the Mountain Battery at Boatman's Creek, the Blackwater Mine and the Globe Mine. Coal mines include views of Lanky's Creek Coal Mine, and the Lanky's Creek to Energetic coal tramway showing new bridges and coal miners. One photograph (p 9) shows several men "beach combing" for gold on the West Coast. Description: Album of photographs probably taken by George W Barltrop (who was at one time president of the Nelson Camera Club), between 1899 and 1902. Scenes include group portraits of Labour Day celebrations by the Missions to Seamen in 1900 and 1901; Prince of Wales birthday celebrations in 1901; members of a camera club (possibly in the Hutt Valley, associated with a Mr Stevens); and views of Island Bay and French Pass, with close-up views of the anchor and a sailor standing at the steering wheel on a fishing boat. In the South Island there are views of the Blenheim Road, Havelock Road, Wakapuaka Road, Cable Bay, and Bishops Peninsula (?). Two images show Indian troops who came to New Zealand as part of the tour by the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York in 1901. Description: Panoramic photograph showing Thomson's cordial and carbonated waters factory in Dunedin. The main building is three-storeyed (built in 1866). Arranged around the Thomson buildings are nine vehicles belonging to the company. Several trucks and enclosed vans with drivers standing beside them. Description: Interview with George Kelly, born in Ashburton in 1916. Refers to growing up on a North Canterbury farm until his father sold it. Talks about his primary schooling, and boarding with his grandfather to attend Christchurch Boys High School. Mentions playing rugby and running. Discusses working for his father as a team driver with a four horse team ploughing for wheat crops. Talks about stacking sheaves to make stooks and stacking the dray. Recalls an electric tractor and traction engines. Refers to going shearing aroung Methven and Highbank for a time and buying a car. Talks about being a member of the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry in the 1930s, training camps, and providing his own horse. Comments on working for several years as an attendant at Sunnyside Hospital and learning "a thing or two about people". Mentions marrying his wife Hilary in 1939, and joining the Police force. Comments that he could not serve overseas in the army during the War because he was a policeman. Refers to resigning from the police when his father had a heart attack [ca. 1948/49] and running the farm for a year. Discusses the difficulty he had buying his own farm Spring Lynne and having help to pay off the mortgage. Talks about arable farming, growing tama grass, peas and clover for seed, wheat and barley, and selling wool during the Korean War. Comments on his Romney flock, number of ewes, and drafting lambs. Comments on the effect of the Depression and World War II on neighbourliness. Recalls the children's farm jobs and his work driving a team of horses after leaving school. Recalls family holidays to Owaka, Otawa and Riverton. Describes music at the dances, meeting his wife, his engagement and wedding. Talks about conscription for World War II and being released to work on Jenkin's farm. Mentions lambing, feeding, shearing and checking stock. Describes his first farm, which was a tussock block, and his first car, a Vauxhall. Describes the process of clearing the land. Mentions ploughing, soil condition, buying horses and operating a horse team. Description: Album of photographs showing the progress made by Frederick McWhannell and his wife Rhoda McWhannell, from breaking in the land in 1923, including felling scrub, to a fully functional farm with cows, sheep, pigs, and areas of forestry. Various activities are shown in detail, including hay-making and ensilage; planting trees including eucalypts, pinus insignis, lausoniana; building a water tank from scratch; creating a tennis court from scratch; and the development of the house garden. Most of the people shown are wither not identified, or only by Christian name. Description: Album of photographs, most of which were probably taken by George William Barltrop, between about 1899 and 1903. They include scenes in the South Island in the Otago area, around Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown, the Arrow River, Shotover River, Lake Hayes and the Remarkables. One sequence shows the barque `Gladys' at Queen's Wharf (?), Wellington, probably in February 1903, with major damage to masts and sails, and a group portrait of sailors, presumably from the `Gladys'. One group portrait shows Frederick Augustus Bennett (later Bishop), with another Maori clergyman, and two European clergymen; a second image shows three different Maori clergymen. Several photographs show scenes of public interest, including a peace demonstration, celebrations for the coronation of King Edward VII in 1902; a group of soldiers marching along Vivian Street, before leaving for the South African War in 1899; and two views of a major landslide in the manawatu Gorge in which a large group of men and women (passengers from a train), had to leave the train and walk across the slip, while workmen helped carry their belongings. Description: Album of scenic views of New Zealand, many taken by Thomas Pringle, others taken by photographers from the New Zealand Tourist Department, and others by unidentified photographers. A number are hand-coloured. South Island scenes include Milford Sound, lake and mountain views, and some of Christchurch city. North island scenes include a number in Wellington, with views of city streets, the Chief Post Office, Government Buildings, St John's Church and the railway station. Most of the other North Island views are of tourist destinations, particularly in the thermal regions, with hot springs, geysers and mud pools. There are a large number relating to Maori, especially at Whakarewarewa, with taniko weaving, flax weaving, poi dancers, te hongi, and posed portraits of young girls in front of a meeting house wearing different styles of cloaks.
