Description: Folder contains a translation into English from Maori by Cowan of George F Allen's account of Bishop Selwyn's visit to Ngati Tuwharetoa leader Te Heuheu Tukino at Re Rapa, Taupo in the 1840s. The account relates the offering of a sleeping partner for Bishop Selwyn by Te Heuheu Tukino. On the last page of the document Cowan discusses the veracity of such an action by the Maori chief. Cowan also notes this account by Allen is referred to in his book `1902 supplementary edition of Willis's guide book of new route for tourists, Auckland-Wellington, via the Hot Springs, Taupo, the volcanoes and the Wanganui River', page 122. Allen's account is in Maori and suggest that the reader must ask "some Pakeha-Maori to interpret it for them". Also contains an unidentified poem which begins "How brightly the dawn maid comes webbed in rosy plumes". Language - Translated from Maori into English Source of title - Transcribed from item Cowan worked as a writer, historian and journalist. He was a fluent Maori speaker and wrote the two-volume `The New Zealand wars: a history of the Maori campaigns and the pioneering period (1922-1923)'. Reference to fences is colour-coded indicating ditches, banks, sticks, and post and rail. Established by Reverend Gideon Smales in 1844 and originally called Beechamdale. Description: Shows a farmhouse on the brow of a hill, with bushy hill outlines beyond. The buildings, one double-storeyed and one single-storeyed with verandah, are behind a broken fence line. In the foreground are two cabbage trees at the left, and a line of low plants across the foreground. Handwritten notes on the backing board identify Mr Preece as the Reverend J Preece, a missionary. Preece worked in the Thames-Coromandel area until he moved to the Urewera in 1847. (Backing board retained.) Description: Diagram depicting mills or proposed mills owned by Maori in the Otawhao, Mokau district of Waikato, indicating their name, cost and number. Mills are drawn in relation to nearby rivers, including the Punui, Mangahoe, Mangapiho, Waikato and Waipa. Two Church Missionary Society missions, in Kaitotehe (Revd. B Ashwells) and Otawhao, and a Wesleyan Missionary Society, Te Kopua (Revd. G. Buttles), are also depicted. Turner's proposed mill indicated. A reference key lists the numbers, names and costs of each mill that has been built, being built or for which funds are being collected, owned by Maori, including the value of Maori labour, the total of which is £2270. The total value of the mills, including buildings and funds being collected by Maori is indicated in the right hand bottom corner as £5750. Signed Jno. Morgan.
