Description: Shows a mother and child portrait. The mother sits in a chair and leans towards her daughter, looking down at her. Her daughter looks on at something out of view. The mother wears a red dress and lace bonnet, and holds a book in her right hand; the child wears a blue dress. The photocopy is made up into a greeting-style card, with a letter attached that explains how in 1969 the author was given the painting done by Charlotte Alington. It states that Miss Alington 'copied the picture from a black and white sketch in an 1897 copy of a magazine so must have decided on the colours herself. The little girl was looking at a parrot in a cage' The author of the letter was Kath Croy who, with husband Errol bought the Alington land at Ashburton when it was sold, and remained friends of the family Quantity: 1 photocopy/ies. Description: A sketch of W H (William Herbert) Alington, dressed as a dragoman for a fancy-dress party. His jacket and Turkish-style pants are dark blue, his shirt white and his stockings, sash belt and turban red. He also wears a long white beard. The verso inscription 'By Aunt Maude' suggetsts that the work might be attributed to Hester Maud Alington; the watercolour is very similar to a sketch made on the verso of a painting of Castle Bellingham (A-446-021). However the initials CMA, bottom right of this watercolour, suggests that the artist might have been Charlotte Mabel Alington. A dragoman was an interpreter or guide in countries where Arabic, Turkish, or Persian is spoken. Description: Shows a view of the Port Hills, sketched possibly from Godley Head, at the mouth of Lyttelton Harbour. Cliffs rise up to the left of the beach, and the hills are represented on the right. The pencil inscription on the verso suggests the handwriting belongs to Charlotte Mabel Alington, and refers to a sketch by her brother John Sydney Alington (Syd) Inscriptions: Verso - top right - Port Hills look too large. There are two cabinet card portraits of Charles Sydney Alington's siblings living in England, Rev Alan Marmaduke Alington (1836-1888), and Gervase O'Brien Alington (1851-1928). The brothers did not stay together for very long, and Charles Sydney Alington who features most in this collection, when he left Talbot trees, farmed at Methven and finally at Seafield near Ashburton. Description: Shows a view of 'St Leonard's' in Seafield, Canterbury, one of the Alington homes. A single-storey cottage with a front verandah stands amidst bush and trees, including pine, with a cottage-style garden at the front of the house. It is likely that the verso inscription is in the hand of Charlotte Mabel Alington, sister of J S A (John Sydney Alington) and L W (Wynford) Alington, one of whom has been cited as the artist Inscriptions: Verso - centre - 'St Leonards' Seafield A year or so after we had settled in our new home. Description: Shows a view of the head of the Waikato River, looking south across Lake Taupo to Mounts Tongaririo, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu in the distance. On the right bank, in the foreground, is a Maori pa, with a pataka or food store shown most prominently. Both banks of the river are densely covered in trees, including pine and cabbage trees, and bush. A canoe or waka with six occupants glides away from the pa across the river. The cottage appears to be in two separate parts, or as two buildings perpendicular to each other. The house has a lot of bush and vines growing around the verandah and windows, and shows part of a pine forest behind it.
