Alington, G H, 1850-1905

Grandfather of William Hildebrand Alington. Born in England, sixth son of Reverend John Alington and Charlotte Sophia (née Bellingham). Employed by the Indo-European Telegraph Department in Karachi and Jask, Iran (Makron Coast, Gulf of Oman) 1869-1874. Arrived in New Zealand in 1874, and formed a partnership with his brothers William Herbert and Charles Sydney, in a property called Talbot Trees on the Rakaia River. Married Winifred Beatrice Dumergue (1893). Wrote letter from Methven in 1893 regarding two railway petitis he was involved with.

George Hildebrand Alington was in the Persian Gulf between 1869 and 1872, when he came out to New Zealand aboard the Crusader. Jask is a port town, about 1,050 miles (1,690 km) south of Tehran, situated on the Gulf of Oman. In 1869 it became the site of an Indo-European Telegraph station at which the overland line from Buehr (Bushire) and Lenga met the submarine cables coming from Karachi (via Gwadar) and Aden.
