Description: Oxford Down sheep quarantined on Mana Island, Porirua, New Zealand. Photographed by an Evening Post staff photographer 10 December 1973. In 1971 the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries took over the management of Mana Island. A sheep research and quarentine station was established on the Island under the control of the Ruakura research station, Hamilton. Description: The left side shows a programme of songs and piano solos, performed on the "Gothic" by Mrs Herapath, Mr W S Inman, Miss K Smith, Mr E G Parrot, Miss M J Jollie, Mr R Wilson, Mrs Parrot, Mr Waymouth, Mrs J R Skeet, Mr Pryce Jones, Mr Howlison, Mr Gaunt. Apart from Mr Inman (ship's purser) and Mr Waymouth these were all saloon passengers on board the "Gothic", leaving London on 30 August 1901. The right side shows a cartoon of passengers disembarking at Somes Island where they were to be quarantined. The cartoonist is C.K.S., likely to be passenger Mr C Kingsley Smith. Description: Comprises translation of the arrival of the `Terpsichore' in New Zealand and quarantine period on Somes Island from 25 March to 12 May 1876. The vessel reached NZ near Banks Peninsula, sailed north and reached Wellington Harbour where it was directed to Somes Island. Buchner describes his feelings on arrival, notes aspects of the people he met, the weather, the two factions of immigrants which developed, the wildlife and life generally on a quarantine station. The photocopy was made from a poor copy of the original. Some words may be difficult to read Source of title - Transcribed Relationship complexity - Buchner's book is in the Printed Collection at 910.4; there is a translation of it at fMS-Papers-2226 by Margery Walton, together with a printout of the passenger list of the `Terpsichore' (which is also at Micro-MS-0031) Buchner was doctor on board the `Terpsichore' which left Bremen 18 Nov 1875 and arrived in Wellington 25 March 1876. The passengers were quarantined on Somes Island. This translation covers the arrival in NZ and the quarantine period on Somes Island. Quantity: 1 folder(s) (13 leaves). 0.01 Linear Metres.
