Rykers, Leslie Bertram Archibald, 1897-1976

Graphic artist and illustrator. He was born 27 August 1897 at Devonport, Auckland, the second son of Archibald and Florence Rykers. At 16 years old, he was apprenticed to the Brett Printing and Publishing Company as a lithographic artist. Apart from a brief period in 1928-1929 when he worked as a partner in the lithographic business Stewart & Rykers, he spent his working life with this firm as a commercial artist. The company produced the 'Auckland Star', 'New Zealand women's weekly', 'Brett's Christmas annual' (for which Rykers designed covers), and much advertising material. Rykers became known through his design of Anchor dairy products and Bycroft biscuits. He was especially adept at using the airbrush. Les Rykers married Frederica Ellen Biggs in 1925, and they had two sons, Neville and Trevor. After his retirement, Rykers painted in oils and watercolours, mainly Auckland landscapes. He died in 1976 and was buried at Bayswater cemetery.
