Description: Maps identifies mission stations, station outposts and religious frontier posts. These have been annotated in coloured pen to distinguish religious groups, for example Church Mission (Society Anglican), Wesleyan Missionary Society, Roman Catholic Mission, Prebyterian Mission and North German Missionary Society. The most prominent group is the Church Missionary Society and then the Catholic Society. The mission stations are most dense in the Auckland region and the upper North Island. In contrast, there are no inland stations in the entire South Island. The enlargement (29 x 72 cm) shows the most dense section of mission stations, between Bay of Islands and the Hokianga harbour and north up to Kaitaia and Whangaroa. The map details were gathered over time as draft maps for the New Zealand Historical Atlas, ca. 1940. Quantity: 1 map(s) in three sheets. 1 enlargement. Date: 1824-1863 - [ca 1990s-2020s]

By: Frankcom, Margaret, active 1991-2023; Spink & Son, Ltd

Reference: ATL-Group-00924

Description: Consists of 74 letters, sent between 1824 and 1863, by missionaries and pioneers in New Zealand. Letters include references relating to the Mission and church matters, land sales and disputes, voyages from England to New Zealand, the import and export of goods, and early colonial life. Notable historical names included in the collection include William Wakefield, Charles Hursthouse, and George Swainson. Folders also contain supporting research documentation, including correspondence, book chapters and in some cases, a transcript of individual letters. Also included in each folder is extensive detail about the postal stamps, information about when the letters were sent and received, and the names of the ships that carried the letters internationally. When item includes transcript, this has been noted in the description. Title supplied by Library. Individual letter descriptions taken from auction house lot descriptions. Arrangement: Letters were delivered to the Library in Spinks auction house folders, identified with a lot number. In most cases, the letters were arranged in date order. Each letter was mounted on to card, noting the writer and the date, as well as information about the post marks and stamps. Some folders have included relevant research documentation, including correspondence, book chapters, and transcriptions. Quantity: 10 folder(s) containing 74 letters. Provenance: Letters were collected by Margaret Frankcom for their contributions to postal stamp history, and the transcriptions, original housing, and accompanying documents were likely created and compiled by her. The collection was then sold through Spink & Sons auction house on her behalf. Processing information: Letters have been removed from Spinks auction house folders and placed into acid-free folders for storage reasons. Auction house folders have been disposed of by Library. Letters have been unmounted and laid flat for preservation reasons, with accompanying research material and transcripts placed behind the corresponding letter in each folder. Original order has been partially maintained as imposed by the auction house lot numbers, except where noted.
