Description: Heather Margaret (Maggie) Read born Darjeeling, India. Father who was in the British Army as a military policeman, died while Maggie was young. Lived in England with grandparents before coming to New Zealand (1948), living at Waiheke Island, and then to Whakatane. Recalls: attending Auckland Business College, gaining a Diploma: working in a commercial field for many years: taking up music as an interest and teaching music (classical guitar); marriage and becoming a potter. Moved to Waikino 1977. Outlines life in Waihi bringing up a family and marriage breakup. Discusses involvement with mining - is on the Waikino Liaison Committee which was originally formed to liaise between Cyprus, as it was then, and the people of Waikino - has since become a sort of Ratepayers Association but still with a connection to mines and new owners. Mentions local potters - Bill Roberts, Michael O'Donnell and Flora Ogilvine. Talks about involvement in the Employment Creating Scheme around Waihi presently. Refers to Equal Employment Act. Description: Susan Marie Reusser Auckland 1948. Backgrounds move to Great Barrier Island twenty three years ago, referring to Chris Milne. Describes conditions, living in shanty, lack of sealed roads, lack of contact with outside world, and coping with young baby. Mentions Paddy McGeady. Refers to Kelsey's boat, `Ngaroma'. Notes that most couples who came to Wairahi have parted and gives reasons. Discusses idealistic views about living in harmony with nature, being an organic gardener, eating healthy food and not wasting or taking more than one's share, shared duties as part of community life and getting on with each other. Recalls CB radios helping to unify community. Talks about decision to become a potter. Bruno Reusser born in Switzerland in 1953. Recalls coming to Wairahi much later than Sue and thinking it [Wairahi] was Paradise as it was so clean and green. Mentions informal pressure put on people not to have diesel generators and refers to community purchasing a tractor which is available to everybody, also that all houses in the valley run windmills, solar panels or both. Mentions the effort involved in getting children to primary school and the lack of options for secondary school children, with some families leaving the islands to enable secondary school children to attend school in Auckland. Notes that Correspondence School is great for those children with self-discipline. Sue comments on the closeness of the community which revolves around the school, with school community centred sport - Boating Club on Saturday night - games nights, fishing contests, and quilting night when 23 women of all ages and areas meet to sew together. Bruno mentions his work on mussel farm and how the estuaries are full of bird-life and their desire to give their children an interest in it.
