Description: Album of photographs (with a few stereoscopes), relating to Shackleton's British Antarctic Expedition between 1907 and 1909. None of the images have captions. The first photographs show some of the Manchurian ponies being trained on Quail Island while in quarantine. The training includes their being roped together, towing a sled on sand on a beach, and along the edge of the water. The horse trainer is probably W H Tubman, a professional horse trainer, with Bertram Armytage who was in charge of the ponies, and Alistair Forbes Mackay, a surgeon and biologist who also helped looked after the animals. There are also scenes of the arrival of the sled-dogs, probably on Quail Island. Views of acitivities surrounding the departure of the Nimrod, including one of Shackleton greeting people, a large crowd on the wharf at Lyttelton, and the escort of HMS Powerful in Lyttelton Harbour. Description: Album of stereoscopes, probably chiefly taken by L A Cotton, en route to Antarctica on the Nimrod with Shackleton's British Antarctic Expedition, with a number showing the arrival and unloading of stores, equipment and ponies. The first views show HMS Powerful "dressed in honour of departure of "Nimrod". Jan. 1st 1908". These are followed by views of the ship Koonya towing Nimrod in heavy seas. Description: Album of photographs taken by unidentified photographers during the British Antarctic Expedition, 1907 to 1909. The album contains 50 pages of which 21 pages are empty. This album consists mainly of portraits of the men (listed above except for Abrahams, given only with surname and not found in published material) Other topics are the Great Ice Barrier; Adelie and emperor penguins; Ross seals, Weddell seals and crab eater seals. Description: Photographs taken by undentified photographers of the beginning of Shackleton's British Antarctic Expedition. The album begins with scenes on board Nimrod while still in London, including several with Shackleton's wife Emily, and two young children, Raymond and Cecily (her name given as Cecilia in this album). From London scenes of shipboard life are shown, ships escorting Nimrod out of Lyttelton Harbour en route to Antarctica, with partial views of the Koonya which towed Nimrod to save fuel. Many of the members of Shackleton's party are clearly identified, as are places. Views show weather conditions (including blizzards and their effect), the landing party, the hut at Cape Royds (exterior and interior living conditions), seals, penguins, ponies and dogs, natural walls of "kenyte" rock formations, icebergs, and various forms of ice crystals, ice flowers, and ice stalactites.
