Description: Photographs taken by undentified photographers of the beginning of Shackleton's British Antarctic Expedition. The album begins with scenes on board Nimrod while still in London, including several with Shackleton's wife Emily, and two young children, Raymond and Cecily (her name given as Cecilia in this album). From London scenes of shipboard life are shown, ships escorting Nimrod out of Lyttelton Harbour en route to Antarctica, with partial views of the Koonya which towed Nimrod to save fuel. Many of the members of Shackleton's party are clearly identified, as are places. Views show weather conditions (including blizzards and their effect), the landing party, the hut at Cape Royds (exterior and interior living conditions), seals, penguins, ponies and dogs, natural walls of "kenyte" rock formations, icebergs, and various forms of ice crystals, ice flowers, and ice stalactites.
