Description: Brian Quinn was born at New Plymouth in 1941. Describes moving to Otorohanga, Rangiatea, South Waikato, King Country and Aria because of his father's work on stations (farming). Talks about the family Pontiac, a Fordson tractor, their home, the importance of music in the home and his sister being in a band. Describes going to Otorohanga school, `wagging' and going to Aria School. Comments on his father's frustration at not being able to go to World War II. Mentions the impact of his parent's getting land though it was `hard country'. Describes driving cows from Otorohanga to Aria. Discusses childhood activities including Christmas. Mentions his mother's relatives. Describes leaving school at the age of fifteen, going shearing, the challenge of shearing, working with Stuart and Hilton Cheeseman, open and contract shearing, the atmosphere in the shed, the second shear, shearing Romneys and Border Leicesters, attitudes to the farmers, the relationship between shearers and shed hands, wages and wet weather. Mentions Tom and John Brough, Murray McSkimming, Bing Macdonald and Malcolm Barclay. Refers to his physique for shearing and conserving energy. Discusses entering local shearing competitions. Comments on the career highlight of winning the 1962 senior Golden Shears then the open championship in 1965. Talks about preparing for the Golden Shears by shearing round Masterton and Pahiatua. Description: Drawn on a published cadastral map of the Karewa Township, annotations highlight the native reserve sections in block 1 (14-20, 33-35, 2, 4) and block 2 (22-26, 37, 42-43, 65-66, 71-72, 77, 78, 90-91), sections not to be dealt with at present (block 1, 21-32), police reserve, school site, government buildings reserve, public hospital reserve, M.R., as well as unidentified sections highlighted in blue. The township is on the boundary of the Maketu block, the Kawhia 'M' and 'P' blocks and the Kawhia Harbour. A note on the police reserve reads 'Secs 45 & 46 . I ML 3263 granted to W. C. Scott'. Pencil annotations show public hospital reserve sold to JM Cussen, 14/12/32, Gaz. 1907 p. 3124, Blk IX, Kawhia Nth S.D. Description: A base map of Lake Taupo showing urban zones, existing, proposed and national reserves has been possibly used by the Officials Committee to hilight the lakeshore reserves and to mark boundaries of blocks, the extent of development, also present development and development not started, all of which are referred to in keys. Numerous pencilled notes refer to Maori land ownership and written topographical descriptions of some reserves. A few place names are added and a note states that the Oruapuraho and Waikino streamas are out of position, Blocks are named Whareroa, Te Hapua, Waikino, Waihaha, Puketapu, Marotiri, Acacia, Tuhingamata, Wairakei, Rangatira, Tauhara Base map: Taupo Lakeshore, showing urban zones and reserves under District Planning schemes and suggested national reserves.
