Auditor. Born in Cromwell, Central Otago in 1892. Joined the Audit Department in January 1910.

Served in the New Zealand Rifle Brigade as Sergeant and was deployed to Samoa from August 1914 to April 1915, as part of the Samoan Advance Party. he also served in World War One with the 1st Battalion of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade on the Western Front from 1915 to 2017 including in the Battle of the Somme. In 2017 he transferred to the Officer Training Corps, and returned to New Zealand. Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM), the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal.

Post war Gair became an Audit Inspector, serving as Audit Inspector, Napier, Audit Inspector for Western Samoa (1930-1935), Audit Inspector, Christchurch, and Deputy Controller and Auditor-General and Supervisor, Local Body Audits. Retired in May 1951.

He was a keen rugby player, being a Wellington rugby representative in 1919, 1921, and 1922. In Samoa he was coach of Avele School rugby team circa 1932. Gair's team won the 1934 Morris Hedstrom Sheild.

Description: Photographs of Samoa, related to the period when Donald Alexander john Rutherford was a teacher, and then Superintendent of Schools in Samoa, between 1922 and 1936. Inside the front cover is a list of names of over a hundred native Samoan teachers who trained in Western Samoa during that period. There are group portraits of members of staff in the Samoan Education Department, teachers, students, sports teams; groups of boy scouts on parade; and one of a group attending the Conference on the Education of Native Races in the Pacific held in Honolulu in 1936. Several images show local and visiting dignitaries, including the Duke of Gloucester, Sir Herbert Hart, General Richardson, and Lord Bledisloe; and the visit to Samoa of a group of New Zealand teachers. Many of the images relate directly to the farewell ceremonies held at the departure from Samoa of Donald Alexander John Rutherford and his family in 1936.
