Description: Photographs of Fiji taken while Maurice Alonzo Parsons was serving in the 8th New Zealand Infantry Brigate in the Pacific (part of the 2nd NZEF Pacific, also the 3rd New Zealand Division). Includes photographs relating to Fiji landscapes, scenaries and plants; native Fijians, Chinese and Indian residents; portraits and group photographs that relates to army life in Fiji. Some buildings in Fiji are included. Collection also contains some photographs of the army in Egypt and the surrounding scenaries. PAColl-9172-033 to PAColl-9172-036 form a panoramic view of the Suva Harbour. Most photographs are annotated and include names of individuals in the photographs. Description: Four letters giving vivid accounts of Harvey's visit to Tonga and Fiji during a world tour. The letters are to his sister, Hannah Harvey Todhunter and his niece Mary Christy Harvey. Dr Harvey, although interested in algae, investigated other aspects of the natural history of Tonga and Fiji, and wrote of a religious revival in Tonga and cannibalism in Fiji. (Twenty six other letters of Dr Harvey, dealing further with his world tour, which took in, inter alia, Australia and New Zealand, are in the the library of Trinity College, Dublin). Description: Comprises Turpin's diary Dec 1870-Jan 1875; draft (193 pages) of his and other early European settlers' anecdotes and narratives, dating from ca 1804; and a brief continuation of the diary from 1892. Source of title - Transcribed from the item. The volume was used originally as a personal diary by Turpin. He then used it write a draft which he he intended to publish under the title `A Programme of anecdotes, narratives and legends of Fiji'. The draft was never completed and stops abruptly in the middle of a note on Fijian fruits. Turpin then used the volume again as a diary, briefly toward the end of 1892, when he was clearing land for the CSR Company at Lakena. Quantity: 1 microfilm reel(s).
