Description: Photograph album containing outdoor views taken circa 1900-1905 by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department in the Northland Region of New Zealand. Photographers unidentified but many possibly taken by Thomas Pringle who was employed by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department in 1901. Compiler of album unidentified. Some images have captions. Images mainly show outdoor views, including landscapes, buildings, beaches, industry (including logging and gum digging), and harbours. Some show people. Whangarei and Whangaroa Harbour feature. Despite the title of the album: 'Maori life and scenery', Maori people do not predominantly feature, except in a loose print taken by Thomas Pringle in circa 1905, showing three girls playing 'whai' string game, and some other prints showing Maori families and individuals. Other: All prints have an inscription "New Zealand Government and Tourist Department Protected 7.1.03", however 7 January is not the date the photographs were taken. It is likely to be the date the was registered/patented. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Inscriptions: Backing board recto - On spine: "ZZ/P575/Photographs of Maori Life and Scenery" and "General Assembly New Zealand library" insignia. This insignia is also on the front of the album. Relationship complexity: This album relates to PA1-o-1884 and PA1-o-1885 which came to the library at the same time and belongs to the same series of albums which were from the Parliamentary Library. Description: Transparency slides of New Zealand selected by Mr Williams as a representative collection to be used in a series of lectures on his return to England. This sheet starts with a series of maps, a world political map, map of the sea floor showing the relationship of New Zealand with the various undersea mountain ridges etc., New Zealand physical, rainfall, and geological maps. Views of Cape Maria van Diemen and Rangitoto nearing New Zealand on board ship. Auckland Harbour from the air; Auckland from Devonport; Ninety-Mile Beach; country near Waipoua Forest, the road into the forest, and Tane Mahuta, on the way to Kaipara; Kaihu River and coastal country between Trounson's Forest and Waihue; and Omamari beach and stream. The last five views show aspects of Holmridge farm owned by Mr Williams' friends Ruth and Vernon Woods. Arrangement: These slides were selected by Mr Williams from his original sequence to create a representative collection of New Zealand images which he used in illustrated lectures on his return to England. Description: Transparency slides of New Zealand selected by Mr Williams as a representative collection to be used in a series of lectures on his return to England. This sheet shows aspects of Holmridge farm at Waihue, including a view of cows in the milking shed; cows in a field; a stream and Tutamoe peak in the distance; sheep being rounded up and penned preparatory to being shorn, Clive Woods shearing a sheep; an aerial topdressing plane in the air; a family group on the tray of a truck; family group of Clive, Barbara and young Vern; one of "Grandpa" Vernon Woods with his grandson "young Vern"; sheep station near Dargaville. Various scenes away from the farm show Queen Street, Auckland; Auckland Harbour with Rangitoto in the distance; main street in Te Awamutu; Mount Pirongia; a bridge over the Waikato River at Hamilton; the Grand Hotel at Rotorua; a steam vent in Park Square, Rotorua; the gardens at the Government Sanatorium, and a game of bowls in progress; and steam vents and the Wahiao meeting house at Whakarewarewa. Description: Shows a view of farmhouse with verandah, at the right, and outbuildings at the left with cattle in pens beside them. The area around the farmhouse is fence and there is a suggestion of garden within the fence line. The countryside is undulating, with a range of hills in the ditance. The recent caption slip accompanying the work, reads: "Possibly south of Maungatapere, west of Whangarei. The land in this area is volcanic and fertile". Description: A view of Ngaheia station, home of Joseph Marsden Williams. The front and left side of the house can be seen, situated on a raised level amongst mature trees and bush. The verandah uprights are covered in wisteria and a woman is pruning them. Around to the left a man and woman are standing, towards the back of the house. A path winds around from the foreground towards the front of the homestead Ngaheia Station, Kawakawa, consisted of 1800 acres, and formed part of the original Pakaraka Estate. The Waitangi river had its source on the estate and flowed through the larger portion of it. The station possessed numerous volcanic hillocks, the Waiotapu Falls and a natural spring of mineral water. The Ngaheia homestead was owned by Joseph Marsden Williams, the youngest son of Henry Williams. The house, built ca 1866, is on a recorded archaeological site (Pa) and is a schedule 2 building on the Historic Places Trust register. The garden has many original and old plantings and some believed to be planted by Joseph Williams, including an oak, a Bunya Bunya, an elm, pohutukawa and two large Norfolk Island pines.
