Date: 1851

By: Gully, John, 1819-1888

Description: Drawing of an albatross shows its wings spread and half-bent back. The body of the bird rests on the deck at the centre, held down from behind by a man or boy in a peaked cap; he has a hold on the bird's left leg. The work is dated 1851. The 'John Phillips' left London for New Zealand, with the Gully family aboard, on 23 December 1851. Therefore it is likely this incident took place in the North Atlantic Ocean.
