Born Glassford, Lanarkshire. Arrived Dunedin between 1868 and 1879. Worked as a farm hand at Dairy Bay near Mahurangi Heads. In 1882 married Annie Davie-Martin of Martins Bay and bought a farm on Sandspit Road, Warkworth. Bought a 330 acre farm at Wright Road, Matakana 1905. His two sons (Francis and James Reid) bought it off his estate in 1922. Had 4 sons and 6 daughters
