Description: Shows city buldings, harbour and hills from the road at Point Jerningham. Plantings on the land just above the road include agaves. The Hunter Building, Victoria University, stands out in Kelburn Titles from artist's inscriptions on pinex backing boards, now discarded. Inscriptions: Unsigned and undated. Description: Album created by G E Mannering, some photographs taken by him. A number of these are of children, only identified by nick-names, or Christian names; and one of an older man in a top hat is named `Grandad'. Several views of the children are taken at the beach at New Brighton in 1893. An interior photograph of an office `The consulting desk' was taken by `HMP'. Photographs also include a scene of hay making, and several of scenes relating to sheep farming, including sheep drafting, and one of 120 bales of wool from `Double Hill Estate' loaded onto four wagons, towed by W.A. McLaren's traction engine. Other scenes in Christchurch include the Christchurch Cathedral; and early photographs of Christ's College, when the buildings were in `corrugated iron Tudor' style; and a house with a century plant (agave americana) in the foreground. The rest of the scenes are mixed, with a few tourist scenes of Maori outside a meeting house, and a group in a hot spring at Tokaanu, and a newspaper cutting with photograph of Rewi Maniapoto from the Christchurch Press (no date). Description: A view across a garden with a herbacious border in the foreground, a large lawn, trees to the side and an agave in flower. In the background is 'Birtley' a two-storeyed house with verandah around the ground floor, the front entrance in the centre Pencil drawings of a whatnot, a seat and a fence on the back Catalogued by the Library on acquisition as 'House in Parnell Road, Auckland, 1917'. However the inscription on the reverse is 'House in Parnell Park'. The house shown, 'Birtley' belonged to the Street family then the Gillies family, with the land becoming Parnell Park, later Parnell Rose Gardens Possibly the work of Ethel S. Jones. The style is similar to hers, and she painted other buildings in the area around the same date 'Birtley' built by Mr and Mrs Charles Street, was occupied after their death by their daughter, Emily Gillies and her family. The Gillies family sold their property in 1914 to Auckland City Council, and it became a kiosk downstairs, and flats upstairs. The house was demolished in 1927. Description: An unidentified man standing beneath the huge flower stalk of an agave shawii plant, giving an indication of its height, with a native lancewood to the right. Unknown location. Photograph taken by Albert Percy Godber. Agave shawii blooms only when 15 years old or more. It has a huge flower stalk between 15 and 40 feet high, after which the plant dies leaving suckers that grow into replacement plants. Quantity: 1 b&w original negative(s).
