Printed material Source of title - Transcribed from item From 1886 the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC) Vicariate of Melanesia and Micronesia were allocated the then Gilbert Islands, with the first missionaries arriving in Nonouti in 1888. In 1897 a Vicariate Apostolic of the Gilbert Islands was established. In 1903 the Vicariate headquarters moved from Nonouti to Butaritari. In 1966 the Diocese of Tarawa and Nauru was established, the Vicar Apostolic, Mgr Guichet, becoming the first Bishop Quantity: 19 microfilm reel(s). 0.10 Linear Metres. Description: House diaries (in French) 1921-1967; photographs of Sister M Clementine Pineau and others; account of the Mission 1898-1961 (in English); accounts of the Mission, including biographies of priests, brothers and others (in Gilbertese). Source of title - Transcribed Founded in France by Rev Fr Jules Chevalier in 1882 in association with the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC). The foundress of the Community was Mother Marie Louise Hartzer. After establishing a house in Sydney, the Congregation began their mission on Thursday and Yule Islands in 1887, and on Rabaul in 1891. The first group of Sisters, led by Sister Isabel, arrived in the Gilbert Islands in 1895, and a second group, including Sister Clementine in 1899. In 1923 Sister Isabel was replaced as the Superior by Sister Yvonne, who in turn was succeeded by Sister Clementine in 1933. The DOLSH Sisters stayed on in the Gilberts during World War II.
