Description: A set of vignettes concerning current political and social matters in Christchurch and beyond. 'Music hath charms' shows the Salvation Army band 'leading a mutiny against the City Council' while they play loudly outside the Christchurch City Council buildings. A drunk man, seen in Dunedin, carries a large sandwich board 'Prohibition a blunder'. A cricket player getting bowled relates to 'South African cricketers' against the Australians in their 5th test. A London professor snoozes under a tree, after stating that 'the sun could do all world's work'. Two small boys, one with an executioner's axe, his dead parents behind him, discuss the murder of the parents after his mother refused to give him a penny to buy lollies. Relates to a newspaper account of a boy in Dunedin reacting violently to strict parents, including his trying to hang himself. A self portrait shows Low sobbing into his handkerchief, while he draws Tommy Taylor, but regrets the ending of the political life of Joseph Ward and William Massey for caricature purposes. Councillor Thacker pulling up a tree from Cathedral Square in the process of transplanting it rather that cutting it down. A confrontation between Britain and Kaiser Bill is about importing goods between the two countries. Gives family background - grandfather, William Flinn, was one of earliest settlers in Great Barrier Island, arriving in 1837, becoming a fluent Maori speaker and was one of the rescuers during the sinking of the Wairarapa 1894. Refers to own involvement in committee for 100th anniversary commemoration. Talks about family burial ground at Grave Island; earthquakes 1950s; old homestead, once used for home schooling, and where Prince of Wales stayed before he became George 5th. Mentions damage by fire 1960. Moved to Great Barrier Island to help parents at Mulberry Grove, and has lived there since 1983. Recalls meeting husband, Cuan, artist / landscaper. Discusses her work as an architectural designer; environmentally designed buildings, and the opportunities offered by the Island to explore buildings that use sun and wind power with reference to the Health Centre which runs totally on sun and wind power. Talks about the advantages of GBI - clean beaches, small classes for children at school, playcentres and Correspondence pre-school and the disadvantages - social isolation, lack of contact with other professionals and stress factor of very bad weather. Description: Susan Marie Reusser Auckland 1948. Backgrounds move to Great Barrier Island twenty three years ago, referring to Chris Milne. Describes conditions, living in shanty, lack of sealed roads, lack of contact with outside world, and coping with young baby. Mentions Paddy McGeady. Refers to Kelsey's boat, `Ngaroma'. Notes that most couples who came to Wairahi have parted and gives reasons. Discusses idealistic views about living in harmony with nature, being an organic gardener, eating healthy food and not wasting or taking more than one's share, shared duties as part of community life and getting on with each other. Recalls CB radios helping to unify community. Talks about decision to become a potter. Bruno Reusser born in Switzerland in 1953. Recalls coming to Wairahi much later than Sue and thinking it [Wairahi] was Paradise as it was so clean and green. Mentions informal pressure put on people not to have diesel generators and refers to community purchasing a tractor which is available to everybody, also that all houses in the valley run windmills, solar panels or both. Mentions the effort involved in getting children to primary school and the lack of options for secondary school children, with some families leaving the islands to enable secondary school children to attend school in Auckland. Notes that Correspondence School is great for those children with self-discipline. Sue comments on the closeness of the community which revolves around the school, with school community centred sport - Boating Club on Saturday night - games nights, fishing contests, and quilting night when 23 women of all ages and areas meet to sew together. Bruno mentions his work on mussel farm and how the estuaries are full of bird-life and their desire to give their children an interest in it.
