He is up a ladder leaning over a fence in the moonlight with a camera with a huge telephoto lens around his neck and has been caught out as a peeping tom by a panda (the People's Republic of China). The panda, leaning out his window in his pyjamas, has caught Uncle Sam by the neck strap of his camera. An American spy plane had collided with a Chinese plane and had had to make a forced landing on China soil. Photographed by an unknown photographer in 1915 The aircraft is a Sopwith Admiralty Type 807, commonly called a Sopwith Folder as its wings could be folded back so that it could be stored on board warships such as the first Bristish aircraft carrier, HMS Ark Royal. Twelve of these aircraft were made in two batches numbered respectively 807-810 and 919-926, and the first were delivered in July 1914. The plane in this photograph was number 808 of the first batch. Wight seaplanes were designed by J S White & Co Ltd for the British Navy. They were used for reconnaissance and bombing during the First World War. No 172 was equiped with radio, a Lewis gun and could carry two 100-lb bombs and three 20-lb bombs. The wings could be folded back so that it could be stored on board warships.
