Dane, Peter, 1921-, Dschenffzig, Klaus Peter, 1921-

Born in Berlin, son of Oskar Bruno Dschenffzig and Elisabeth Marwitz; he emigrated to London in 1933, and was interned as an `enemy alien' in mid-1940 and taken to Australia where he spent two years in NSW behind barbed wire studying mathematics and philosophy and passed the Melbourne University Entrance exam. He returned to England and spent two years in agriculture, then a year as a nurse and a hospital stoker. In 1945 he married Gabi Herrmann, a nurse and fellow refugee. He studied theology at Wistow, near Leicester and did so well in the London University Intermediate examination that a grant enanbled him to study English at Leicester University College. He spent seven years at Makerere in Kampala, Uganda and then in 1961 moved to New Zealand and joined the staff at Auckland University where he taught for 25 years. From the 1970s he was an environmental activist, with Friends of the Earth. On retirement he became an organic grower in the Far North and was a founding member of their association, also of the Community Business and Environment Centre. After the death of his first wife he married Evelyn Heke-Dane. His published works are: Twenty-four sonnets (Lowry Press, 1982), The Albatross is dead (Hudson Cresset, 2000), Loving art (Hudson Cresset, 2004), Past present (Hudson Cresset, 2005), Timeless love (Hudson Cresset, 2007), Sex poems (Words that work, 2007), Undone (Words that work, 2008).
