Description: Comprises three master copies (only one appears complete) and one bound version of a visual timeline of Hōhepa Te Umuroa’s life with a bi-lingual narrative in verse form and foreword. Probably the basis of the opera titled 'Hōhepa', that McLeod completed in 2012. Images are from various sources (some attributed) and include a variety of formats, including photographs, maps and illustrations. Hōhepa Te Umuroa was from the Whanganui River (Ngati Hau of Te Ati Haunui-a-Paparangi). He was convicted for armed resistance in the Wellington area in 1846 and transported to a penal colony in Tasmania. His grave was discovered in 1985 and his remains were repatriated to Aotearoa New Zealand and reburied in 1988 at Roma cemetery in Jerusalem. McLeod gained permission from the iwi to tell his story in operatic form. Arrangement: Donated in a folder (not retained). Description: Papers, publications, photographs and a postcard relating to Henry Stowell (also known as Hare Hongi). Includes articles, whakapapa and a waiata relating to Stowell's wife's grandmother, Mere Ngamai (Mere Ngamai o te Wharepouri, 1804-1852). This is a photocopy of a painting by Eileen Cowan, with words of a waiata composed by Mere Ngamai which is "a chant of adoration for Mount Egmont" with a translation by James Cowan, and whakapapa of Mere Ngamai. Also includes a postcard of a shining cuckoo/pipiwharauroa, an obituary of Sir James Carroll circa 1926, whakapapa relating to Stowell, Maori grammar notes created by Stowell for his teaching, and a copy of a picture of the iron gunboat Rangiriri. The publications comprise: 'The Hocart papers in the Turnbull Library' by C R H Taylor, published in 1950, and 'New Zealand Centennial 1840-1940' published by the New Zealand Government Department of Tourist and Publicity in 1940. Also includes annotated sheet music for 'Sarabande and allegro' which has a cutting of a picture of Llewellyn Jones attached. The photographs comprise an image of a kiwi, a portrait of James Cowan circa 1940, two portraits of Henry Stowell (the prints are wrapped in an annotated article about Sir James Carroll), a portrait of Henry Stowell and Sir James Carroll circa 1916, and a portrait of Henry Stowell circa 1900. Description: `From pioneer days to centennial year' by J McHale of Burwood, written ca 1950 recounts the story of Mr & Mrs McHale, and their four children, in particular Harry McHale. The family commenced their voyage from Bristol to Lyttelton on the `Cashmere' in 1859. An epidemic of measles broke out and the ship returned to England. Mrs McHale and 3 children (including Harry) were put ashore while Mr McHale and the elder son continued onto New Zealand on the `Cashmere'; Mrs McHale and children came onto New Zealand in the `Zealandia' a few months later. The family first settled at Pigeon Bay. Mr McHale obtained work as a carpenter erecting new buildings for Mr Montgomery's sawmilling business. After a year or two McHale bought land at Little Akaloa at a small bay called Raupo Bay. Also `Memoirs of Pigeon Bay' by H J McHale, pioneer (mss in pencil).
